I’m Maryan, part of a digital media student team competing in the 2021 Student Service Design Challenge, and this blog is about my experience thus far... But first, what is the Service Design Challenge and how does it work? The Service Design Challenge is a 6 month-long international competition run by Philips Experience Design, IBM, and IDEO to help coach the next generation of  designers. It invites groups of students in design disciplines to take part. The process itself consists of an application stage, a  first selection stage that determines the finalists who will remain for the full competition, followed by a series of month-long rounds that focus each of the teams on the development of their service design. The final stage awards prizes for the top 3 design teams.  2021 Service Design Challenge: rounds and deadlines Why did I get involved in the Service Design Challenge? I chose to do this...

Entrepreneur Teenagers

Entrepreneur Teenagers

A Response to: 'Teen Entrepreneurs Overcome the COVID Slump' by Sebastion Parsons, Design Enterprise Studio Member, March 2021 My name is Seb Parsons, I am a member of the Digital Enterprise Studio at UWE. My blog post is in response to the Guardian article 'By May, I’d Made over £1000; Teen Entrepreneurs Overcome the COVID Slump' by Lily Canter published 17 October 2020. The article made me reflect on some of the ways in which the world has changed for Creatives during the COVID-19 pandemic. A large element of Canter's article is related to digital skills, such as social media marketing, digital enterprise, graphic design etc. These, among many others are all topics that I have been learning about throughout my degree and that will continue to shape my career after graduating so it is always interesting to read news stories involving these particular topics from all different perspectives. While the methods and tools used by these teenage entrepreneurs are fairly standard and well-practiced...

Audio Classification

State of the Art Audio Classification – Simply by Erik Tomica, Design Enterprise Studio Member, March 2021 Have you ever wondered how can humans recognise music and sounds in just a couple of seconds? And how applications like Shazam replicate that despite of such a vast amount of music released every year? How are humans able to tell someone’s emotion based on the tone of their voice and would a machine be able to do the same without any understanding of what emotion is? There won’t be any technical terminology and if so, this will be very simply explained so let’s dive right in:A lot of progress in machine learning and IT in general comes from understanding humans, how we do things and why. In the case of audio recognition and audio classification we [humans] have have taken inspiration from mother nature once again. It all started with a simple question:...

Lockdown Problems

Clever digital technology solutions to help tackle increased domestic violence during lockdown by Africa Montis-Ngomo, Design Enterprise Studio Member, March 2021 As technology is always evolving and growing there are many ways in which this can positively influence the design of solutions that can highly benefit some of the most negative aspect and weaknesses of our modern age. I am talking about issues such as the increase of domestic violence which has significantly got worse during recent pandemic-related lockdowns. Violence towards women seems to have always been present in human history. Thankfully, the last few decades have seen many improvements, from equal rights movements to women across the world making their voices heard. However, even today there is a big percentage of women who are still unable to voice their opinions freely due to pressure of their culture, religion, or current domestic situation. In the United Kingdom an estimated 7.5% of women experienced domestic violence in 2019. The exact figures during this pandemic are...

Design Ethics

Design Ethics

A Response to 'Dear Designer: Bad Work Is Always Your Fault' by Grainne O'Flaherty, Design Enterprise Studio Member, March 2021 Ethics is not something new to consider in regard to design, however, with the growth of the digital design industry ethical consideration has become not only more complex in regard to legislation, but more insidious and dangerous for the low level designer attempting to traverse a legal minefield while supporting themselves and their family. Mike Monteiro’s article “Dear Designer: Bad Work Is Always Your Fault”, published on June 26th, 2019, answers a user submitted question; “I work at a large company. Decisions are made way above my pay grade. I’m able to influence small things, but not the larger picture, even when I know decisions, we’re making are unethical — such as using what I know to be a dark pattern to keep our users from unsubscribing. I certainly don’t want to get fired. If the decision is coming down from management, can...
