Managing Teams

Managing Teams

Ways of Managing & Leading a Project Team by Catherine Hodgetts, Design Enterprise Studio Member, March 2021 During my time with the RAFAC (Royal Air Force Air Cadets) I have attended many training courses in leadership and team management. Being a military organisation the styles taught were always authoritative. Researching into management styles for digital media teams more recently has been a great opportunity to reflect on the styles I have been used to and how they compare with other options. So in this post I will share what I think are important aspects of managing a project team effectively! One key aspect to managing a team which can often cause confusion right from the start is that many people equate management with leadership. While these often go hand in hand, they are different skills and should be approached in very different ways. A leader is a visionary, the one who creates an idea and sets out the parameters of what they want done...

NFTs for Digital Artists

NFTs for Digital Artists

Are NFTs the future for Digital Media Artists? by Joe Hall, Design Enterprise Studio Member, March 2021The emergence of NFTs (or non-fungible token) has come from the surge of popularity in blockchain technology over the last few years. On the 11th of March 2021, the first purely digital NFT based artwork offered at an auction house, ‘The First 5000 Days’ (shown here), was sold at Christie’s for $69 million. The artist, Beeple, became one of the top 3 most valuable living artists because of this sale. He started his NFT career on Nifty Gateway, a marketplace for Nifties (their word for NFT’s), back in October 2020 with the 3 open edition artworks he released in December 2020 for $969, reselling for as much as $125,000 in March 2021. My name is Joe Hall, I am a multimedia designer and videographer. Recently I have been obsessed with all thing’s cryptocurrency, especially how they can be used to improve the Digital Media industry. Looking into...

Virtual Influencers

A Response to: 'Virtual Influencers Make Real Money While Covid Locks Down Human Stars' by Vu Doan, Design Enterprise Studio Member, March 2021In this post I offer my thoughts on emotional and business aspects that are being impacted by virtual influencers, and create a field for discussion and voice questions, all in response to a previous Bloomberg Business post by Thuy Ong in Nov 2020.One of the hottest trends in the influencer marketing industry nowadays is the appearance of virtual influencers. What even more surprising is the fact that they earn a seven-figure income per year, which is 252 times more than average workers in the UK in 2020. They also target social media platforms such as Instagram, Youtube, ... which were previously pre-dominant by human stars only, and they are getting a lot of support from the audience. So, will this phenomenon do more good than bad to the industry in the far future? Is it okay that virtual influencers make...

Web AR

Web AR

Web AR by Quince Gore-Rodney, Design Enterprise Studio Member, March 2021Web-based Augmented Reality, aka WebAR, is one of the most exciting technologies at the forefront of web development. Augmented Reality (AR) is the connection of real life with a digital world, allowing us to extend reality through our computer devices. As a graduating student with an interest in 3D technologies such as three.js/react-three-fiber, I’m vested in the possibilities that augmented reality can do to 3D graphics and how it can give them more relevance to the real world. While plenty of Augmented Reality use mobile app systems to bootstrap the technology like ARKit, ARCore, Vuforia etc. (Timchenko et al, p.211, 2017), they require downloading a separate application. WebAR content on the other hand, can be loaded instantly from the internet. This illusion of the physical world mixing combined with the ability of the internet, means WebAR provides instant immersion. When WebAR was well in its infancy, it required web plugins such as ARToolkit,...

It can be the strongest building blocks for personal growth. This is how volunteering kick-started my Digital Media creative career!I’m rapidly coming closer to collecting my degree, ‘real life’ becomes full time and I’ve been reflecting a lot on what’s most important to me (as we all have in this pandemic). For me I’ve been doing some soul searching in terms of where my next steps are going to take my life. I needed to understand what makes me tick? What wakes me up in the morning? I’ve recognised that volunteering has become an integral part of my life affecting nearly all parts of my life from professional to personal.Everyone’s different, so this isn’t a life hack that works for all!
