Libraries & Frameworks

Libraries and frameworks for a budding front end developer by Cameron Tebbenham-Small, Design Enterprise Studio Member, March 2022So, you’ve made your first website, maybe even a few, but now you want to look ahead and advance to an intermediate level. Let me introduce you to the wonderful world of CSS and JavaScript libraries frameworks by exploring a few that I have used in my own workflows. But firstly, what are frameworks and libraries and how do they differ?A coding library is a collection of standard functionalities – pieces of reusable code that enable developers to skip a great many steps that have likely already been accomplished by developers before them. These could be maths functions, interactive web-forms or other that are then inserted into your code as a supplementary function. Think of it like adding an extra chair to your room – you’ve already done some decorating, but don’t want to build a full new Ikea chair so get something premade...

RGB Matrix Build

How to build an RGB LED Board by Joshua Hart, Design Enterprise Studio Member , March 2022Hi, I am Josh, a final year student in Digital Media who enjoys the physical building of computing devices as well as interfacing with them using software environments. This article will walk you through the necessary steps so you can build yourself a decent size RGB display board at home. RGB LED display board, built by Josh. This board uses ten 32 x 64 panels. RGB LED panels have long been recognised for their large scale and bright presence at live music shows/ festivals and are now rapidly becoming the go-to display board for advertising content and information in our cities. Emotion Design

Three ways to evoke emotion through your web site design by Jess Kent-Woolsey, Design Enterprise Studio Member, March 2022Emotions play an important role in our experiences. They paint our realities, guide decision making and draw attention. This also applies in the digital world when we design user experiences. How on earth can a digital screen provoke emotion, I hear you ask? That’s a valid question.A good way to look at this is to divide the emotional experience into three parts: Usable, desirable and useful. Usable refers to the functionality, or usability, of the experience such as the navigation and information architecture. Desirable refers to the aesthetic elements that appeal to our visual and auditory senses, such as the interface, interaction and visual design. Useful means the experience satisfied a particular need and could do so again. A harmony of all three components can make the experience stand out from competitors and persuade users into becoming long-term customers. Image source: Hong Yoon Jung Elicit...
